Did you know?

Arizona is the 6th largest and the 14th most populous of the 50 states. Its capital and largest city is Phoenix. Arizona shares the Four Corners region with Utah to the north, Colorado to the northeast, and New Mexico to the east; its other neighboring states are Nevada and California to the west and the Mexican states of Sonora and Baja California to the south and southwest.

Until the southern half of the Territory of New Mexico seceded from the Union to create the Territory of Arizona, what is now the state of Arizona was managed by the United States government as part of the Territory of New Mexico. The federal government of the Confederate States of America formally organized this newly established territory on Saturday, January 18, 1862, when President Jefferson Davis approved and signed An Act to Organize the Territory of Arizona, which was the first official use of the name “Territory of Arizona.”

On February 24, 1863, the federal government created a new U.S. Arizona Territory in Washington, D.C., consisting of the western half of the previous New Mexico Territory. These new limits would subsequently become the state’s foundation. Prescott, the first territory capital, was established in 1864 after a gold rush in central Arizona.
